VTV July “Take Off”: Don’t bury yourself in plastic waste

Broadcasted in July 2019, the thematic “Take off” (Cất cánh) TV programme was discussing about plastic waste, a trending topic recently. Honored guest speakers are Musician Huy Tuan, Photographer Hung Lekima, activist Hoang Thi Minh Hong – Director of Center of Hands-on Actions and Networking for Growth and Environment – and business woman Nguyen Le Hang – Deputy CEO of An Phat Holdings cum Director of Sustainable Development, An Thanh Bicsol., JSC. These speakers are famous with their ceaseless efforts for a better, healthier, lively life and a less plastic waste world.

With related topic about plastic waste, the July “Take off” programme had exchanged with Musician Huy Tuan, one among the first celebrities to stand up for environmental protection. Besides, the talk show also had Photographer Hung Lekima – the “garbage hunter” sharing about his thousands of photos touching waste problem. With photos taken during his Trans-Viet motorbike journey, he has helped to raise people’s awareness for a green life style and to act and save our ocean. The sharing of these two gentlemen receive very good comments from activist Ms. Hoang Thi Minh Hong, Director of Center of Hands-on Actions and Networking for Growth and Environment (CHANGE).

During the event, it is remarkable that entrepreneurs have shown up and share mutual understanding and responsibility for environment with individuals and organizations. It is needed to mention thousands of manufacture facilities that are processing medical waste into plastic bags. It is also the the ambiguity in “biodegradable” concept. Production cost and product price are also a challenge. For An Phat Holdings, products are produced from imported materials from German and the production process and storage is strictly controlled and monitored had triple the price compare to conventional single-use plastic products. But, when judging the total benefit for human health and environment, it is worthy investment.

A question was raised by Ms. Le Hang “If you were in a coffee shop they give you 2 options to buy coffee either served in a plastic cup with the price of VND 20,000 or in a cup made from eco-friendly materials with VND 23,000. Which one would you opt for?” The question has opened various viewpoints in choosing daily consumables.

Only with 75 minutes, the programme had successfully delivered key message to audiences. It helped to make audiences understand the harm of producing and releasing waste, especially plastic waste, indiscriminately to the environment.
